You may even want to link your group with an existing organization such as a citizens’ association, community development office, tenants’ association or housing authority. These groups usually can aid in providing infrastructure.

Go door to door to recruit members to your group. Also, have crime and drug prevention materials translated into other languages dominant in an area, i.e. Spanish or Mandarin.

Ask older people, or people who rarely leave their homes to keep watch over neighborhood children, and to report any thing out of the usual they may see.

Gather the facts. Find out all you can about crime in your neighborhood, including police reports, victim surveys and even neighbors’ perceptions about crime.

Work with small businesses to clean up empty lots, repair rundown storefronts, clean up dirty streets, and to create jobs for young people.

Most importantly, keep in mind that watch groups are not vigilantes; if they do suspect a crime, they should immediately contact the police.
